At Paws-In Studio, there are a couple of choices for your dog’s portrait session. There are not many dog photographers that offer both backdrop sessions with studio lighting AND a natural light studio option.
I find it really important to offer both, which is what we’ll dive into today in the blog.

Studio Light vs. Natural Light Studio
The choice between a studio light session and a natural light session may not seem very different, but there are a few things to keep in my about both.

Studio Light
Studio light works extremely well to freeze action and control the amount of light hitting your dog. Those treat-catching shots you see on my website are done using the studio strobe lights to freeze the action. A short burst of light goes off each time I push my camera’s shutter button, so every shot is crisp and sharp.

Natural Light
Natural light is pretty simple to understand. There’s a large window in the studio with a sheer curtain to diffuse the light hitting your dog. There are no flashes of light, and while you’ll get an in-focus crisp image, the freezing action is not as easily achieved.

Is studio light or natural light right for your dog?
There are a few things to consider when deciding which type of session is right for your furry friend.

CHOOSE A STUDIO LIGHT BACKDROP SESSION IF:
• You want treat-catching and ball chasing shots
• Your dog can sit on a slippery surface, jump and run
• You want a solid color behind your dog

CHOOSE A NATURAL LIGHT SESSION IF:
• You have a very anxious dog who may be scared of flashing lights
• Your dog slips easily or has trouble standing up
• Your dog is a senior who would be more comfortable on a bed
• You are in love with the look of natural light softly hitting your dog or the look of a natural setup instead of a colorful backdrop
• You want to be in shots with your dog in a natural way (on a bench, chair or bed)

No matter which type of session you decide to book, you will be in love with your images. There is beauty in both types of sessions!
